The plastic product industry is one of industries which has been rapidly developed in recent years in Chinese light industry, and the increase speed keeps over 10%/a all the time. According to statistical data from China light industry information center, there are 9,473 state-owned enterprises and non-state owned independent accounting enterprises (hereinafter referred as enterprises above designated size) with annual sales revenue of over RMB 5 million in Chinese plastic product industry in 2004, an increase of 11% over 2003; the yield of plastic products reached 18,466,100 tons in 2004, an increase of 11.98% over 2003; and the gross industrial output value (current price) reached RMB 380.315 billion in 2004, an increase of 25.00% over 2003. The gross industrial output value of plastic product industry accounts for 10.14% of that of light industry, is the third among 19 main industries of light industry and accounts for 2.78% of gross domestic product (RMB 13,651.5 billion); and the plastic product industry achieves the product sales rate of 98.03%, which is higher than the average of light industry. The sales avenue of plastic product industry reaches RMB 368.113 billion, with year-on-year growth of 25.68%; the profit and tax are RMB 23.102 billion, with year-on-year growth of RMB 2.093 billion; and the total profit is RMB 14.167 billion, with year-on-year growth of 10.64% and accounting for 9.04% of total profit (RMB 156.666 billion) of light industry.

On the eve of the founding of People’s Republic of China, workshop-style plastic product manufacturers were only located in some big cities such as Shanghai, Guangzhou, Wuhan and Chongqing in China and could only produce phenolic aldehyde, celluloid, etc. According to statistics, the total yield of plastic products was nearly 200 tons in 1949. The Chinese first set of PVC resin production equipment was successfully built in Jinxi Chemical Factory (presently Jinhua Chemical Industry (Group) Co., Ltd.) in 1958, which symbolized that the Chinese plastic industry entered the period of rapid development. The yield of domestic plastic products was 24,000 tons in 1958, 130,000 tons in 1965, 948,000 tons in 1979, 3,542,000 tons in 1988, 15,340,000 tons in 1996, and nearly 20,010,000 tons in 2004 (for more details, please see the table 1). The total processing capacity of plastic products has exceeded 20,000,000 tons, which retains the No.2 position in the yield ranking of plastic products in the world.
